Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood

Ten minutes ago, though, the world was very simple, for it consisted solely of something that seemed like one gigantic explosion. Actually, it was three separate large explosions within half seconds of one another, but it’s fairly difficult to make the distinction when you’re lying on your back with your ears ringing. However, it’s fairly easy to think rapidly and incoherently, which was exactly what I was doing as I lay on my back, wondering whether my hearing would return this time, and, incidentally, what in the hell had just happened to me and my men.

Excerpt from the book Joker One a Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood, written by Donvan Campbell, a Marine whose  battalion was assigned to one of Iraq's worst hot spots: the city of Ramadi, where they fought from street to street and house to house for seven brutal months. A brilliant narrative about commanding marine infantry in Iraq.

Marines Love The Zone

I believe that Bill O'reilly was one of the voices who attempted to point out to the good folks in congress the futility of our government's involvement in the Viet Nam war, way before it was fashionable to do so. This was a turbulent time in our country and long before a No-Spin Zone would come along and try to set things right.

Bill O'Reilly puts the liars on the spot and makes em fess up! And since I know how much the Marine Corps loves the concept of zones, I can't help thinking that they should add Bill's to their list; they have zones of influence, battle zones, friendly zones, hostile zones, combat zones, neutral zones and a whole mess of other zones. So it comes as no surprise that marines would embrace a No-Spin Zone, especially a fair and balanced one, headed up by a guy who wouldn't take any crap from the spinningest zone ever created – the US Government!

No matter, it was what it was and I blindly set forth to prove myself a man at 18, and joining the Marine Corps at the height of the Viet Nam war was my way of doing it. It wasn't long before I wished I had never heard the word domino. Domino's is a game – played by politicians, I was just a marine trying to do a job and stay alive. For all of you people that spit on me at the airport in LA coming home from Viet Nam, and the stoned hippies that accused me of being a baby-killer -I dedicate this song to you – "From the Halls of Montezuma To the Shores of Tripoli…"

Marines And Styx

For Marines or any other of our Armed Forces who have to get down in the trenches and fight the battles, war is hell. But wars can be profitable in spite of being horrendously expensive to run. At $20 million per missle somebody is making money!  That's what wars are really all about, politics and money. Whether or not there are still marines out there that believe in the "Grand Illusion" package they bought into when they enlisted, to defend the United States of America "against the threat of terrorism" is up in the air. Or do they only think about survival, putting in their time and getting back to the world so they can bury their heads in the sand like the rest of us.

In my time of service in the Marine Corps (1968-72) the "Grand Illusion" then was known as the Domino Theory. If Viet Nam fell to the commies, the rest of Asia, Europe and the Middle East would follow. Everybody hated the commies thanks to Joe McCarthy so it was easy to convince the people to agree to war against them. Get em all riled up about defending this or that little Asian country against the threat of the ravenous Bear – good ole mother russia. What a crock! It was all about oil, even back then.

Do Marines Still Believe In Just Causes?

Are we being taken for fools at the hands of a few rich politicians?, is that why we are soft on illegal immigration, a society overburdoned with with crime, drunk drivers, druggies, gangs and yes, even BANKS!? It's been almost 65 years now since Americans could hold their heads high in a fight against a common enemy, and it's nothing short of criminal that every war fought since WWII has been fought for the wrong reasons.

Washington's power-elite spews out millions of words in print and on the Internet to convince the American public of the righteousness of a particular cause/war, but only those with the potential to make them their next fortune. Hiding behind a wall of faux patriotism, speechifying to the American public about sacrifice and protecting the country against terrorism, inflaming the media with their breathless and dramatic announcements. Nice try boys, but Woodward and Berstein taught us the days of falling for that are over. Now we need to figure out how we deal with it.

Even after all this time, we still don't really know why our sons, daughters, dads, uncles, husbands, etc gave up their lives in Korea, Viet Nam, Persian Gulf or anywhere else. You could say they did it in the service of their country, but it's hard for the folks back home that to embrace that notion when Bob, Bill or Ronny are killed in a rice-paddy, 10,000 miles from our nearest shore in a country where no one wants them! What defending your country should really be all about is squatting inside a bunker on the beach in Oceanside, 50 cal machine guns ready to repel boarders?

Never fear, the United States Marines will do their jobs and obey lawful orders as they have been trained to do, no matter the cause. Ready to make the supreme sacrifice, to die in defense of their country. Unfortunately, America has changed, why would anyone die for a country as messed up as ours is right now? If you want to see a soldier die for his country in a fit of patriotism – go to the movies! A loud sound track, lots of shooting and things blowing up, tattered flags waving and the hero well, he's the guy riddled by machine-gun fire who dies while clutching the American flag. The Marines I know are just trying to make it back alive – that's their only revenge against the desk jockeys that sent them there.

What Happens If Marines Capture Bin Laden

I really believe that if you have enough money in this country, American attorneys will take your case to the highest court in the land, take their sweet time about doing it, and get you off, never caring if you were guilty or innocent. If you don't believe that you havn't been reading enough Grisham books. Even if a case is solid enough for an easy conviction we all know how fickle procedural issues can be. With enough money laws can be created – just for you! We all know these things – and laughed as loud as everyone else to the strains of our favorite attorney jokes! It's just not funny anymore.

These are the kinds of things that make my friend Joe Ligotti, Ohhooo, The Guy From Boston, Baby! go ape-shit crazy on. Let's say that the marines capture Osama Bin Laden hiding out in one of his resort caves, ratted on by one of his rag head friends. If they had any sense these lucky marines would shoot him on the spot, chop up his body for buzzard food, then pretend like it never happened. The next day they announce total withdrawal of all Americans from Afghanistan and bomb Iraq to hell on the way home.

With no GITMO around to try him in a secure place he might just get prosecuted in America. Would he live to see a courtroom? Gee, would he get a fair trial? Where would he get a change of venue to, Israel, maybe? That might be interesting! I will bet you even money right now that some ambulance chaser is out there that would defend Osama Bin Laden in an American court with a plea of "not guilty."
